Quote of the day

"Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside of them. And it's much cheaper to buy somebody a book than it is to buy them the whole world!"

(Neil Gaiman)

So well-said! Gaiman rocks.

I give both books and art supplies to children. Books are durable goods; if they're treated well, they'll last through several generations. Art supplies are consumables; kids always need more of them, and they all like to get them. It makes shopping particularly easy, and parents appreciate not having more trinkets and toys cluttering the place up: most kids have way too many of those already.

Have you ever seen modeling beeswax (https://www.bellalunatoys.com/stockmar-modeling-beeswax-6.html)? That's one of the bestest art mediums for kindergarten and up, because it's really fun, lasts indefinitely and doesn't make a mess.

My daughter loved that stuff. I still have some of the little flowers she made from it, tucked away in a trinket box somewhere.
