"My Periodic Table", by Oliver Sacks

Well worth the read, even if you're not fond of chemistry (and I am ;))

Oh, that was beautiful; thank you.

"My sense of the heavens’ beauty, of eternity, was inseparably mixed for me with a sense of transience — and death."

I feel that way about it too, which is a big part of my 'Sky Rocks' thing. I'm neither terminally ill nor particularly old, but I never expected to live to grow up, let alone to live this long, so everything's had that 'transient' flavor since my teens. At this point, I think I've got a fair chance of living to my 90's, but I also think I'll more likely die suddenly than slowly, and won't get any chance to say farewell, so I'm always saying it in my heart.

I hope Oliver Sacks gets to celebrate his Bismuth Birthday.
