Interesting...

So I was intrigued by the title of this article in The Washington Post: How to get rid of notifications for unread emails and texts

The article begins thus:

"The numbers inside the angry notification bubbles on our phones and computer screens have become meaningless.

I have 66,394 unread emails, 416 unlistened-to voice mails and 316 alerts from my bank. There are push alerts, piling up for everything from old grocery orders to breaking news. Sometimes, just for fun, I’ll hit mute and let the Slack notifications pile up.

I’m not even the worst offender. A survey of friends and co-workers found unread text messages, social media notifications and DMs in the double-digits. Two people had more than 300,000 ignored emails."

...Frankly, I'm a bit puzzled--are people not at all concerned about missing an important message? Besides, do they not find it annoying...?

P.S. I decided to risk taking a look at the comments for this article, and I see many of the commenters are equally puzzled.

This is what filters are for - all of the things I subscribe to are swept into folders, and the rest is family, friends, and finances. (Well, and medical.)

It's amusing to me that in the middle of the article you copy and pasted you also got the text "Sign up for The Tech Friend newsletter."

My stupidphone doesn't have a "select all" feature for text messages, nor can I filter them. I can block specific senders, but I'm afraid I might miss a medical appointment and then have to pay the no-show fee. My adopted brother texted me and and we had a long conversation in text. And my phone is very awkward to text on. So I have maybe 30 or more messages, including ad spam and appointment reminders, that I just don't have the patience to select and delete them all individually.

I cannot even fathom putting up with that many notifications lurking around! I have a bunch of "unread" comment notifications in the inbox here, which I leave unread in hopes of someday getting around to replying, but in my email, texts, etc., being unread means I need to do something with it. It would drive me bananas to have thousands of unread emails... [profile] _@
