Это город. Еще рано. Полусумрак, полусвет.
А потом на крышах солнце, а на стенах еще нет.
А потом в стене внезапно загорается окно.
Возникает звук рояля. Начинается кино.

This is a city. It's still early. Half-dark, half-light.
And then, there's sun shining upon the roofs but not yet onto the walls.
And then, a window suddenly lights up in the wall of the house.
The grand piano starts to play. The film begins.

И очнулся, и качнулся, завертелся шар земной.
Ах, механик, ради бога, что ты делаешь со мной!
Этот луч, прямой и резкий, эта света полоса
заставляет меня плакать и смеяться два часа,
быть участником событий, пить, любить, идти на дно...

And the globe has awakened, and rocked, and started spinning.
Oh, film operator, for goodness'sake, what are you doing to me!
This ray of light, straight and sharp, this stripe of light
Makes me weep and laugh for two hours,
Makes me participate in events, makes me drink, love, sink to the bottom...

  Да, говорю я, жизнь все равно прекрасна,
  даже когда трудна и когда опасна,
  даже когда несносна, почти ужасна —

Even when it's difficult and when it's dangerous,
