Title: Variation on a Theme by M. de Maupassant
Author: med_cat
Rating: PG
Warning: angst
Word count: 321
A/N: 2nd part of an answer to KCS's 2nd prompt table--prompt #92--illness contracted by a patient. Virtual cookies to anyone who can identify the source of Holmes’s last statement in this story (“I shall never understand the medical mind.”) XD

“Very well…since you insist,” I managed, my voice still not quite steady.  “I was treating a 15-year-old boy from a wealthy family…his mother is in her mid-30s, still very attractive and quite a social butterfly.  The boy fell ill about two weeks ago; it was just a high fever at first…”

“Go on.”

“So the mother would stop by and see the boy for a few minutes in the morning and in the evening, in between attending parties and social events.  Then, a few days later, it became evident that the boy was suffering from smallpox.”

“Oh, Watson…I’m sorry.”

“Thank you, Holmes…but that was not yet the worst of it.  He was very ill, and his mother was afraid of contracting the disease, you see…so she would not come into his room.  The boy died last night, and he knew he was dying…he begged his mother to come see him for the last time, or at least to walk past the window of his room so that he could say farewell, but she could not bring herself to do even that.  And today, I received a request from one of the physicians in that area to come see the mother. Holmes, we had to send her to the insane asylum. The guilt and grief drove her mad…” I hid my face in my hands, trying to avoid breaking down completely.

Holmes laid a hand on my arm. “My dear Watson, surely you could not have done anything differently?”

“No, I suppose not…yet one feels responsible when something like that occurs…even if I could have done nothing else…”

He smiled sadly. “I shall never understand the medical mind.  I have some pleasant news, however.  Die Fledermaus is on tonight; would you care to attend?”

I smiled for the first time that day.  “Yes, thank you.  But I thought you did not care much for Strauss?”

“Nor do I; but I believe you do?”

Oh, that's so unutterably sad! :(

Uh-oh, wait. Err...smallpox was (is?) *highly* contagious, right?

*meeps of anticipation*

smallpox

Contagious? Yes; airborne method of transmission. 30% mortality for the regular form of smallpox and 90% mortality for the highly virulent form.

Why do you inquire? Surely you don't mean to imply what I think you're implying? Surely you don't want Watson or Holmes (or both) contracting _that_ dread disease?! :0

Re: smallpox

...

Well, you're using the prompt, Illness contracted from a patient. Is that not the prompt you meant?

?

Re: smallpox

I am copying and pasting the prompt from your table:

92. Illness – contracted by patient

Well?

Re: smallpox

*realises something* Ohhh, did you read that as a patient contracting it? I meant it as contracted by Watson via a patient. I see, sorry about the misunderstanding; I should have been clearer.

Re: smallpox

Oh, OK. I wondered if that's what you meant; it probably would have been clearer if it said "contracted via patient".

So...now I have to give Watson smallpox? I thought he had gotten himself vaccinated earlier! :(

I'll think about it...

Thank you,
Cat

Re: smallpox

Lol, no not at all - I was just expecting it from the prompt, due to what was in my head. :) Sorry about the confusion.

Re: smallpox

Well, now that you have started me thinking in that direction...I'll have to do some research on how they quarantined smallpox cases in Victorian England...what percentage of physicians were vaccinated against it...and all that. Darn! Just got finished with a research utilization class yesterday, and now I must do _more_ research?!

Confound it! XD

Later,

smallpox

As to your implied question, since 1980, the World Health Organization considers smallpox an eradicated disease; that's why we no longer routinely vaccinate against it. However, smallpox cultures are kept in research labs (WHY?!)

Going to see if I can track down that quote - and just wanted to make sure you noticed that Part I of this is posted in [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes and Part II here in your private journal; just don't want any other of your avid readers to miss out on more. :)

Oh dear; no, I didn't notice; I thought I posted it to the community...as I believe I said before, too late a night, too early a morning, and not a good time of year...I'll go post the thing to the community.

Thanks!
