Poem of the day, take 2

Acquainted with the Night

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.

I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
A luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

Somehow I think this would fit nicely with Holmes's (enforced?) hiatus.
Got me thinking certainly.

You bring up an interesting point; I've not thought of that before.

Oh, I agree! It's very interesting (and sad) to try to picture him in the poem.

You always manage to find the best poems! This another one that threatens to become a favorite. The lines are the kind that just echo in your head for minutes after you read it. *sighs blissfully*

Thanks to you, I'm becoming a much more cultured person!

My blushes :)

It is quite my pleasure and I'm glad that you like some of my favourites; I collect them ;)

Cheers,
