The sickest ICU patients may be at a higher risk of death if their rooms can't be seen from nursing stations, according to researchers, who said electronic monitoring was not enough. Study data found overall mortality rates were not affected but the sickest patients assigned low-visibility rooms had a higher risk of death compared with patients of similar acuity in high-visibility rooms. ANA supports expanding whistle-blower protection laws
The ANA is supporting federal whistle-blower protection for health care workers following the acquittal of Texas nurse whistle-blower Anne Mitchell. ANA general counsel Alice Bodley said only 22 states have such protections and it may be time to expand federal laws to health care professionals who identify financial irregularities and unsafe practices related to Medicare or Medicaid.
