   Translation mine... Cat

A miller was riding on his donkey.
The boy was trudging along on foot behind the miller.
"Oh will you look at that," the idle loiterers were saying,
"Grandpa is riding, and the boy is walking!"

Где это
Видано?
Где это
Слыхано? -
Дедушка
Едет,
А мальчик
Идет!

"Why, this is unseen and unheard of!"
"Grandpa is riding, and the boy is walking!"

---

Дедушка
Быстро
Слезает
С седла,
Внука
Сажает
Верхом
На осла.

Grandpa quickly climbs off the saddle,
Sits grandson astride the donkey.

Ишь ты! –
Вдогонку
Кричит
Пешеход. –
Маленький
Едет,
А старый
Идет!

"Hey look at that!" a passerby yells walking past.
"The little one is riding, and the old one is walking!"

Маленький
Едет,
А старый
Идет!

"Why, this is unseen and unheard of!
The little one is riding, and the old one is walking!"

---

Мельник
И мальчик
Садятся
Вдвоем –
Оба
На ослике
Едут
Верхом.

Miller and boy get onto a donkey together
And are both riding it.

– Фу ты! –
Смеется
Другой
Пешеход. –
Деда
И внука
Скотина
Везет!

"Hee look at that!"
laughs another passerby.
"The beast is carrying both grandpa and grandson!"

Дедушка
С внуком
Плетутся
Пешком,
Ослик
На дедушке
Едет
Верхом.

Grandpa and grandson are trudging along on foot,
The donkey is riding on grandpa.

– Тьфу ты! –
Хохочет
Народ у ворот. –
Старый
Осел
Молодого
Везет!

Где это
Видано?

Слыхано? –
Старый
Осел
Молодого

"Sheesh look at that!"
People by their gates laugh out loud.
"The old donkey is carrying a young one on his back!
Why, this is unseen and unheard of!
The old donkey is carrying a young one on his back!"

Mm, yes, some recent proceedings reminded me of this poem, so hunted it up and translated :)

Thanks for the compliment; I do wish I could rhyme, as the original is rhymed ;) Marshak was fluent in English, actually, and had translated a good number of children's rhymes and other poems from English into Russian.

Oh, I remember having to read something like this tale in grade school. I think the story utilized a camel instead of a donkey though :)

Hee hee ;) The moral is unchanged, though ;) And yes, likely enough Marshak didn't invent the story himself.
