The man, undeterred, went to Hillel and made the same request. Hillel responded, "What is hateful to you, do not do to another. That is the entire Torah; the rest is commentary. Go now and learn the commentary."
В Талмуде есть следующая история: В Израеле в первом веке до нашей эры жили два известных раввина, Хиллель и Шаммай. Однажды к Шаммаю пришёл язычник и попросил его: "Научите меня всей Торе за то время, что я смогу простоять на одной ноге, и я приму иудаизм." Шаммай очень разозлился и этого человека прогнал. "Как ты смеешь даже просить об этом? Я изучаю Тору всю жизнь и то ещё не выучил её полностью."
Но этот человек оказался настойчивым и пошёл к Хиллелю с той же просьбой. Хиллель ответил ему: "Того, что ненавистно тебе, не делай другому. В этом вся Тора--остальное в ней лишь комментарии. А теперь иди и изучай комментарии."

Bella, bella, bella.... there is some significance in that somewhere, I am sure... Give me a year and I'll tell you what it is LOL!!
The significance is merely this--that love for another is the founding principle of Judaism; that all the study and all the knowledge and observance of laws and regulations is worthless without it.
Note also: Hillel's statement is very conservative; he does not say "love another"; he says, "do not hurt another."
