Не верю тем, чьи никогда
I don't trust those

 Глаза печалью не туманятся.
Whose eyes never get clouded by sorrow.

Я знаю плачет и вода
I know, even water weeps

Пред тем как льдом она затянется
Just before it gets covered with ice

Река грустит как мы с тобой,
The river is sad, just like you and I

Хотя и знает : все изменится
Even though it knows: everything will change

Придет весна и вновь листвой
The spring will come and leaves will again

Ольха на берегу оденется
Clothe the tree on the river shore

Без грусти лист не упадет
Without sorrow a leaf doesn't fall

Без боли ветка не сломается
Without pain a branch doesn't break

Без тяжких мук не тает лед
Without great torture the ice doesn't melt

И льдом трава не покрывается
Nor the ice covers the grass

Мне видится в закате дня
I seem to see at the sunset of the day

Стекает на дорогу пыльную
Flowing onto the dusty road

Слеза крестьянского коня
A tear of the peasant's workhorse

Что тянет ношу непосильную.
Which is pulling too heavy a load.

Поэты, знаете ли вы
Poets, do you know

Печаль травы под корень скошенной?
The sorrow of grass mowed close to the ground?

 Боль выгорающей травы
The pain of grass seared by the sun

 И женщины любимым брошенной?
And of a woman whose beloved abandoned her?

Уменье жить и не страдать -
The ability to live and not to suffer

 Благое свойство не любившего,
Is the blessed quality of one who did not love

Заботой согнутую мать,
Either his mother bowed down by care

И брата на войне погибшего.
Or his brother who perished in the war.

Не станет людям веселей
People won't grow any more cheerful

 От показного молодечества .
From one who is showing off how happy-go-lucky he is.

Легко любить все человечество
It's easy to love all humankind

Соседа полюбить сумей.
But can you actually love your next-door neighbour?
