John Donne

Meditation 17

Devotions upon Emergent Occasions

"No man is an iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee...."

I had to study or at least read some of John Donne's poems for my A Level English Lit course. I could not make head or tail of his poems, never mind the meaning behind them! Now many years later and having experience of life, for the first time reading this i can truly undertstand what he is conveying. I think i shall blow the dust off my poetry book of all those years ago this week and explore with new understanding! Thank you for reminding me of John Donne! :)

You are most welcome. And yes, we studied him in school too...his work takes a little time to comprehend, but it's worth the effort involved, I think :)
