The Moon was but a Chin of Gold

737

The Moon was but a Chin of Gold
A Night or two ago—
And now she turns Her perfect Face
Upon the World below—

Her Forehead is of Amplest Blonde—
Her Cheek—a Beryl hewn—
Her Eye unto the Summer Dew
The likest I have known—

Her Lips of Amber never part—
But what must be the smile
Upon Her Friend she could confer
Were such Her Silver Will—

And what a privilege to be
But the remotest Star—
For Certainty She take Her Way
Beside Your Palace Door—

Her Bonnet is the Firmament—
The Universe—Her Shoe—
The Stars—the Trinkets at Her Belt—
Her Dimities—of Blue—

Thanks for sharing. I have enjoyed many of Emily Dickinson's writings in the past. You remind me why with this addition :-)

Delighted you enjoyed :) I haven't come across this particular one before, someone posted in the greatpoets comm and I hunted down a better version ;)

I even had opportunity to share the poem with a fellow FF writer (MapleleafCameo) today. It was very appropriate to her recent write up "Luminous".

Glad you found such a quality version!

My pleasure, glad to hear it was shared :)

And yes, Emily Dickinson is best when the original punctuation and capitalization are preserved, that is what I looked for :)

I'm impressed that you know when you've found the version with original punctuation and capitalization! I am sure I'd not know :-)

I have read a fair amt of her work before; her punctuation and capitalization are very distinctive. Click on "emily dickinson" tag in my LJ, you'll see what I mean :)

Ah, I see what you mean. Quite an abundance of hyphens. Why? (I don't know the significance, never having studied poetry before)

Not only hyphens, but note how random the capitalization is, most nouns, and then some other words...

Why? It was just her style, that's all ;)

Her punctuation reminds me rather of Marina Tsvetayeva's work, she was also very fond of hypens.

Interesting. Always makes me wonder, what was her rational behind such? Or maybe she didn't have one but just felt it should be that way?

Just what she felt like, I suppose; I haven't read of her mentioning any particular reason ;)

Oh, this is gorgeous.
