My Virtual Reading Room

Here's an allegory I happened to see in noble_7's LJ; I'll translate:

Один человек открыл рыбный магазин и повесил над головой огромную надпись:
«Здесь продается свежая рыба».

К нему подошел друг и сказал:
- Зачем ты написал «здесь»?
И он выбросил слово «здесь».

A man opened up a fish store and hung up a huge sign over the door:
"Fresh fish sold here."

A friend came up to him and said,
"Why did you write the word 'here'?"
So he erased the word 'here'.

Тогда подошел другой друг и сказал:
- «Продается»? Само собой разумеется. Ты же ее не раздаешь даром?
И он выбросил слово «продается».

Another friend came up and said,
" 'Sold'? Naturally. You are not giving it away for free, are you?"
So he left out the word "sold".

Подошел третий друг и сказал:
- «Свежая рыба»? И так понятно, что свежая. Кто у тебя купит тухлую? Выброси слово «свежая».
Владелец магазина подчинился.

A third friend came up and said,
" 'Fresh fish'? That goes without saying that it's fresh. Who's going to buy rotten fish? Leave out the word 'fresh'.
The store owner obeyed.

Теперь на вывеске осталось только слово «Рыба», и тут подошел четвертый человек и сказал:
- «Рыба»? Изумительно, зачем ты это написал! Это и так можно за милю понять по запаху.
Владелец магазина удалил с вывески и это последнее слово.

Now only the word "Fish" was left on the sign, and a fourth person came up and said,
" 'Fish'? I'm amazed that you bothered to write it. One can smell the fish from a mile away as is."
The store owner removed this last word from the sign.

Подошел пятый человек и сказал:
- Какой смысл вешать над магазином пустую вывеску?
Владелец магазина убрал и вывеску.

A fifth man came up and said,
"What's the point of hanging up an empty sign over the store entrance?"
The store owner took down the sign.

Тогда подошел шестой человек и сказал:
- Раз уж ты открыл такой большой магазин, неужели нельзя было повесить сверху вывеску:
«Здесь продается свежая рыба»?

That's when a sixth person came up and said,
"Since you've opened such a large store, couldn't you hang up a sign over the entrance,
'Fresh fish sold here'?!"
