"Iolanta", opera-movie

med_cat: (cat in dress)
A rarity amongst operas--one of the very few operas with a happy ending. Chaikovsky is the composer, and sorry, there are no English subtitles in this film (filmed in 1963 by Riga Film Studio).

Here's info about the opera and a summary of the plot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iolanta

Happy endings aren't at all rare in opera. Just in Puccini opera. :-)

Rare enough, in famous ones at least: lessee: "La Traviata", "La Boheme", "The Queen of Spades", "Faust", Eugene Onegin", "Pagliacci", "Carmen"...none of them happy endings, most, in fact, quite tragic...nor are they all by Puccini...;)

Which operas (not operettas) did you have in mind that end happily?

I suppose I should have said later 19th century opera, of which Puccini is the trademark.

All 18th century opera -- opera seria or opera buffa ends well. e.g. Giulio Cesare or anything by Handel. Mozart's stuff -- Don Giovanni, Cosi fan Tutte, Le Nozze di Figaro. 19th century Opera Buffa -- Il Barbiere di Siviglia, The Thieving Magpie. etc.
