ARS POETICA

All poems had already existed once.
They were buried under a layer of ashes,
Covered over by a layer of dust,
And gradually, they were forgotten--
It is our job to restore them.

Our job consists of exactly this:
We must restore word after word
And once again, put those words into the same places
Where they once stood.

It is the same as resurrecting
A vague trace
Left in our soul
By our early childhood dreams.

It is the same as remembering
Music
That you'd forgotten long ago,
But had once heard.

So one looks--
Should it be like this, or like that,
Tries to remember--
Like this, or like that,
Suffers--
Was it really like this?

One tries a word--
No, not like this,
Begins again,
No, that's not right,
Loses one's temper--
no, it's not like this,
heavens, how did it go?

And suddenly one startles--
That's how it was!
And suddenly one remembers--
yes, that's exactly how it went,
Yes, of course--that's how it went,
That's exactly how it had been, not otherwise!

Wonderful:-)

Reminds me of the notion that a sculptor simply removes the bits which hide what he knew was underneath.
