IS THIS THE ULTIMATE ASTRO-PHOTOGRAPH?
Last night, Australia had prime viewing of a 'blood-moon' lunar eclipse. However, the southernmost parts of Australia were offered another photographic opportunity – the Aurora Australis.
Several groups on social media exist to support and promote Aurora photography, and last night they set the ultimate challenge – capture an aurora and the eclipse in one go. And that's exactly what Toby Frost did.
This image is an 11 shot panorama, each a frame of 20 sec exposure, f3.5 27,mm, iso 2000 on a Nikon D610. The final image was post processed in Lightroom.
The 'blood' moon isn't as crisp and clear as other photos you may have seen of last night's lunar eclipse. That's because the camera settings needed to capture the aurora have exposure times about 6-7 times longer than what's needed to capture the Moon (which is quite bright in the sky) – hence the Moon in this image looks a little 'over exposed'.
