[livejournal.com profile] elenbarathi--I remember you'd expressed interest in reading more of Edouard Asadov's poetry, here's one I thought you might like. The rhyme scheme in the original is abab.

An Offensive Love
by Edouard Asadov

It has struck ten. The house is quiet.
She is sitting and waiting tensely.
She can't read or sleep,
What if her beloved calls, what if he comes by?!

Even though the evening has turned on its chandelier of stars,
It's not that late, the day has not been lived through yet.
Surely it couldn't happen that he won't call!
It cannot be that he'd not think of her!

"Surely he wanted to, and many times,
But he has so much to do--one thing, and another...
But his heart and soul are here with me.
Why is she fibbing to herself
And why is she lying to herself in that way now?

Her life, for many days now,
Has not flowed as placid as the Serebryanka river,
Her beloved is always with her--
Just like Khan Girei with a submissive captive woman.

It used to be, that, having had a drink or two,
He'd admire her heart: "She is always so loyal!"
But what is actually in that heart--joy or sorrow?
He never knew that,
And never attempted to find out.

Whether he's boastful or rude, sober or tipsy,
No objection and no sigh ever comes from her.
Only he is right and only he is intelligent,
And she is only "eccentric" and "silly".

And surely, she, of all people should know
That he never gave any consideration to her,
A hundred times he broke up with her and returned,
A hundred times he lied to her and was forgiven every time.

In the days of trouble her friends kept telling her:
"It's time to leave him, has been for quite a while.
Be proud! Enough humiliating yourself!
You should understand, yourself--this can't go on!"

She would nod her head, sometimes she'd cry,
And suddenly look at everyone with a mute appeal in her eyes:
"But I love him...It's awful...almost a sin!...
And still, he's really not that bad!"

It was useless to argue here,
And again she went into her voluntary captivity,
To serve again, to humiliate herself again
And not demand anything in return.

It has struck midnight. The house is quiet...
She sits and waits, relentlessly.
She can't read or sleep:
What if he calls? And what if he still comes?

Love brings joy to your doorstep.
With love, it's easier to believe, and to dream, and to live.
But, as the saying goes, God forbid
That anyone should love in that way!

Oh, this rocks; thanks!

Back in the 80's, a friend who was a grad student in Psychology wrote a parody psychological study of how ARF ('Asshole Recognition Factor') and NARF ('No Asshole Recognition Factor') affect womens' selection of mates. NARF was indicated by phrases such as "He can be really sweet sometimes" or "He didn't mean to; he'd just had a little too much to drink". There was also BARF ('Borrowed Asshole Recognition Factor') when the subject's friends said things like "Honey, you could do so much better."

This poem is the perfect illustration of the effects of NARF, including the friends trying to provide BARF.

My pleasure!

A most interesting and valid study, and yes, I agree with your analysis of the poem in the terms of the study ;))

Poor girl, she's like Rachel Bloom in We Don't Need A Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7GRx538OgY): "I made a life-size replica of you out of socks you left at my apartment."

... hey, we've all been there, right? ^^

Interesting re: socks replica, despite protestations :P

I don't know--I'd not been in such a situation myself, fortunately--perhaps I am a rare exception? ;)
