Is tomato a fruit or a vegetable? The case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1893.

And yes, tomato was decided to be a vegetable for everyday purposes (it had to do with import tariffs, see here for a more detailed explanation and here for the legal documents.

DOn't get me started on the fruit/vegetable thing. Why otherwise rational people can't understand the concept of two different classification systems used for different purposes, oh it's beyond me.

Instead I will think of Copper Age Indian traders presenting melons to a Predynastic Egyptian baron, and his wife being delighted and demanding they plant some right away.
