Google Doodle celebrates Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's 384th birthday

med_cat: (cat in dress)

How Antoni van Leeuwenhoek discovered the sperm cell and a rare hiccuping disease, from "The Telegraph"

...I loved the chapter about him and his work in Paul de Kruif's "Microbe Hunters", which I first read...quite a few years ago, now ;)

Interesting article!
As an aside, I think the Dutch stole all the vowels from the Welsh.

Pleased you found it of interest and yes, not thought of that but I think you're right! ;)

The Welsh won the Consonant War against the Gaels - who, of course, call it the Vowel War, and maintain that they were the winners. There's a bad Welsh pun about this, since v mutates to b in Welsh, but... never mind.

(This is poetic truth, not to be mistaken for actual 'truth' truth.)

You might like The Mabinogion is a cavalcade of consonants (http://bettermyths.com/the-mabinogion-is-a-cavalcade-of-consonants/), but be warned; it's full of naughty language.
