A few grooks by Piet Hein

med_cat: (cat and books)
Naive you are
if you believe
life favours those
who aren't naive.

  • Naive

People are self-centered
to a nauseous degree.
They will keep on about themselves
while I'm explaining me.

  • The Egocentrics

  • Problems worthy
    of attack
    prove their worth
    by hitting back.

    • Problems

The road to wisdom? — Well, it's plain
and simple to express:
Err
and err
and err again
but less
and less
and less.

  • The Road to Wisdom?

Haha, these are good, thanks :)

It was [livejournal.com profile] rabidsamfan who showed me the work of Don Marquis :)

You don't happen to read Russian, by any chance? There is one Igor Guberman, who writes somewhat similarly styled 4-line verses.

I see :)

UN radio, how neat!

Guberman's verses are called "Gariks"--from his first name, Igor. I'd translated a few last year, for a friend, and will copy here. Unfortunately, I lack his talent for rhyming, but I hope you can enjoy them nonetheless ;)
~~
"My delight in life has a valid foundation,
The Lord has truly beautified my life:
Thankfully, I am so uneducated
That I'm always learning something new!"
~~
In the colourful many-voiced circle dance,
In the flashing by of differences and omens,
There are people who emit light
And people who absorb it.
~~

People learn this lesson the least,
When they study how to build mutual relationships,
That to get too deeply involved in others' fates
Is all right only if a personal invitation is issued.
~~

I've traveled around to different countries,
And my sorrow is as old as the world:
What mean person hung up a mirror
In every bathroom, over the sink, in the morning?
~~

I've always loved books, drinking, and women,
And never asked God for anything more.
Now my zest has been diminished by my age,
Now I no longer have the strength for books.
~~

Getting involved in many things to do,
Don't dash around, like a botanist around the jungle,
Don't grieve that you couldn't get to everything--
Perhaps you were late for the Titanic.
~~
The future doesn't spoil my relish for life,
I am too lazy to tremble in fear of the future;
To think every day about a rainy day--
Is to make every day a rainy one.
~~

Btw, have you read Phyllis McGinley? I'd found her work via a ST:TOS fanfic story :)

Take a look--I've a few of her poems I like best posted under the "phyllis mcginley" tag--http://med-cat.livejournal.com/tag/phyllis%20mcginley

I especially like her "In Praise of Diversity".

Aren't they? They remind me of Guberman's 4-line verses (in Russian) a bit; I'd shown you a few, a while back ;)

Yay, Grooks!

"You'll often find that it suits your book
To be a bit smarter than you look;
You'll find the easiest method by far
Is to look a bit stupider than you are."

Works fer me! ^^

Hee hee, often a valid method, I hear, if one is able to pull it off! ;)

(see the Gariks, further up in the comments, I think you might like 'em ;))

Haha, very cute; thanks!

Yep, thought you'd like that one ;))

I must say, though, that "Gariks" overall are less...well-bred, than "Grooks", lots of gariks with 4-letter words in them; but equally many good ones without.
