Back in the 60s I was told by nurses on both coasts that all nurses knew Florence Nightingale died of venereal disease.

No, it's just a weird bit of folklore. I've also heard it isn't true.

The thing is, IMHO it wouldn't matter if it _were_ true--there is a number of famous people who are known to have died of syphilis--it doesn't lessen their artistic accomplishments, does it?
