Quote of the day

med_cat: (woman reading)

"When people insult you, don't take offense, don't take it personally, but do listen to their words.
They are telling you how they see the world, and they are telling you the exact negative qualities that they possess.

'The Law of Mirrors' states that one can only see what's in them, regardless if it is what is actually present in reality or not.
Release the need to defend or try to explain to them that you're not being whatever-nasty-insult-they've-thrown-at-you,
but evaluate instead all of these insults, and realize that this is who they are.

Then, decide if a person with those qualities is one who you'd like in your life or not."

Um. The "Law of Mirrors" isn't a real law; it's a made-up aphorism expressing some unspecified individual's unscientific new-age opinion. Does one have to be a bigot to recognize bigotry, or depressed to recognize depression? Can psychotics and narcissists only be identified by other psychotics and narcissists? Do you have to be obsessed with Pokemon to notice that someone else is?

Obviously not, and stating an unsupported opinion as a 'Law' is intentionally misleading.

Quite a few people take any criticism or complaint about their behavior as an unprovoked and unjustified personal attack based solely in the other person's "negative qualities". So how about this message instead?
"Release the need to defend or try to explain to them that you're not being whatever-nasty-insult-they've-thrown-at-you, but evaluate instead all of these 'insults', and ask yourself honestly if maybe they do have a valid point, even if they're not expressing it in a way that flatters your ego."

You are right, and more in-depth than I had in mind when I posted this.

See...how shall I say? It's one of those quotes, that apply in certain situations, and I was thinking of a particular set of situations that I'd seen, that's all.

Otherwise, just as many such quotes, it's too pat and doesn't apply to everything. Similar examples come to mind, that I'd seen, such as:

"Never apologize, never explain. Because people who matter won't mind and people who mind don't matter."

(I mean yes, in some situations, to some extent, sure, it will not help to try to explain...but...)

(I've found some other quotes/pics on Pinterest, too, the other day...will probably post them to LJ for dissection and commentary, will tag you when/if I do)

Anyway! Thanks for your insightful analysis, as always. You might like this quote by Doe Zantamata better:

("In a really good friendship, some days you're the bread and some days you're the toaster. Some days you really need some warmth and encouragement and other days you're there to give it.")

or this one ;)

("If you can get past the fear of looking a little silly or getting a little dirty, you sure can have a lot of fun here in this thing that we call life.")
