My Virtual Reading Room

Жили-были два брата:
Треугольник с квадратом.
Старший – квадратный,
Добродушный, приятный.
Малодушный – треугольный,
Вечно не довольный.

Once upon a time, two brothers lived together:
A triangle and a square.
The older one was square-shaped,
Kind-hearted and amicable.
The younger one was triangular,
Always complaining.

Стал спрашивать квадрат:
«Почему ты злишься, брат?»
Тот кричит ему: «Смотри,
Ты полней меня и шире.
У меня углов лишь три,
У тебя же их все четыре».

The square began asking him,
"Why are you angry, brother?"
The triangle yelled back at him:
"Look, you're fuller and broader than I am.
I only have three angles,
Whereas you have all four!"

Но квадрат ответил: «Брат!
Я же старший, я – квадрат».
И сказал еще нежней:
«Неизвестно, кто нужней!»

But the square replied, "Brother!
It's because I'm older, and I'm a square."
And he added, even more tenderly,
"It's hard to say which of us is more necessary!"

Но настала ночь, и к брату,
Натыкаясь на столы,
Младший лезет воровато
Срезать старшему углы.

But the night came, and towards his brother,
Bumping into tables on the way,
The younger one is stealthily sneaking up
To cut off the angles from the older one.

Уходя, сказал: «Приятных
Я тебе желаю снов!
Спать ложился ты квадратом,
А проснешься без углов!»

Leaving, he said, "I wish you
Pleasant dreams!
You went to sleep a square,
But when you wake up, you'll have no corners!"

Но на утро младший брат
Страшной мести был не рад:
Поглядел он – нет квадрата.
Онемел. Стоял без слов…
Вот так месть! Теперь у брата…
Восемь новых уголков!

But in the morning, the younger brother
Was not happy to have taken his dreadful revenge:
He looked--there was no square.
He was dumbstruck and stood there wordless...
What a revenge! Now the brother...
Has eight new small angles!
