Мы без конца проклинаем товарища Сталина, и, разумеется, за дело. И все же я хочу спросить — кто написал четыре миллиона доносов? Дзержинский? Ежов? Абакумов с Ягодой?

Ничего подобного. Их написали простые советские люди. Означает ли это, что русские — нация доносчиков и стукачей? Ни в коем случае. Просто сказались тенденции исторического момента.

Разумеется, существует врожденное предрасположение к добру и злу. Более того, есть на свете ангелы и монстры. Святые и злодеи. Но это — редкость. Шекспировский Яго, как воплощение зла, и Мышкин, олицетворяющий добро, — уникальны. Иначе Шекспир не создал бы «Отелло».

В нормальных же случаях, как я убедился, добро и зло — произвольны.
Так что, упаси нас Бог от пространственно-временной ситуации, располагающей ко злу...

Одни и те же люди выказывают равную способность к злодеянию и добродетели. Какого-нибудь рецидивиста я легко мог представить себе героем войны, диссидентом, защитником угнетенных. И наоборот, герои войны с удивительной легкостью растворялись в лагерной массе.

Разумеется, зло не может осуществляться в качестве идейного принципа. Природа добра более тяготеет к широковещательной огласке. Тем не менее в обоих случаях действуют произвольные факторы.

Поэтому меня смешит любая категорическая нравственная установка. Человек добр!.. Человек подл!.. Человек человеку — друг, товарищ и брат... Человек человеку — волк... И так далее.

Человек человеку... как бы это получше выразиться — табула раса. Иначе говоря — все, что угодно. В зависимости от стечения обстоятельств.
Человек способен на все — дурное и хорошее. Мне грустно, что это так..

Nothing of the sort. These reports were written by the ordinary Soviet citizens. Does it mean that the Russians are a nation of snitchers and squealers?
Not at all.That is simply the tendency of the historical situation.

Of course there is inborn inclination towards good and evil. Moreover, there are angels and monsters in this world. Saints and villains. But that is rare.
Shakespeare's Iago, as an embodiment of evil, and Myshkin, as the embodiment of good, are unique.
Otherwise, Shakespeare wouldn't have written "Othello".

Under regular circumstances, however, as I have had occasion to find out, good and evil are arbitrary.
So, may God preserve us from a space-time situation which predisposes people towards evil...

The very same people show an equal ability towards evildoing and toward virtue. I had met repeat criminal offenders whom I could have easily pictured as military heroes, dissidents, defenders of the oppressed. And on the other hand, the military heroes blended into the general prison camp crowd with amazing ease.

Of course evil as a principle of ideology cannot exist. The nature of good is more likely to be broadly spoken of. Nonetheless, in both cases, random factors are at work.

That is why I find any categorical moral statements ridiculous. Humans are good!... Humans are evil!...Humans are base cowards!... A human is a friend, comrade, and brother to another human... Homo homini lupus est...And so on.

A human to a human...how can I phrase it better... is a tabula rasa . Or in other words, anything is possible
Depending on the combination of circumstances, a human is capable of anything--bad or good. It saddens me that this is so...
