"Because in the hearts of the children/ There is neither East nor West..."

med_cat: (cat in dress)

To James Whitcomb Riley

Your trail runs to the westward,
And mine to my own place;
There is water between our lodges,
And I have not seen your face.

But since I have read your verses
'Tis easy to guess the rest,--
Because in the hearts of the children
There is neither East nor West.

Born to a thousand fortunes
Of good or evil hap,
Once they were kings together,
Throned in a mother's lap.

Surely they know that secret--
Yellow and black and white--
When they meet as kings together
In innocent dreams at night.

By a moon they all can play with--
Grubby and grimed and unshod,
Very happy together,
And very near to God.

Your trail runs to the westward,
And mine to my own place:
There is water between our lodges,
And you cannot see my face.--

And that is well--for crying
Should neither be written nor seen,
But if I call you Smoke-in-the-Eyes,
I know you will know what I mean.

"Oh, the places you'll go!"

med_cat: (cat in dress)

Some inspiration for the beginning of the new year...:)
~~
Oh, the Places You'll Go!
by Dr. Seuss

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you'll head straight out of town.

It's opener there
in the wide open air.

From a few famous faces to adorable animals and kids under the tree to soldiers in wartime, here's how we've had a Merry Christmas through the years.

1889: Three children gathered around Christmas tree with toys.

1896: Two little girls in bed, playing with Japanese dolls; a little boy with a drum stands at the bedside. Stockings hang from the mantel behind them.

"We'll survive this trouble"

med_cat: (cat in dress)
Another old favourite, from "Leopold the Cat's Summer":

(Take a look, particularly, between 0:30 and 0:36, in the top video)

"We'll survive this trouble":

Translation of lyrics:

I walk along and sing about everything that's good,
And I give the gift of my smile to the passers-by.
If I don't find an answer in another person's heart,
We'll survive this trouble too,
By the way, we'll survive that.

The sun shines brightly, high up in the sky,
How good it is to live in this world.
If thunder suddenly sounds in the middle of the summer,
We'll survive this trouble too.
By the way, we'll survive it.

A drizzly rain beats against the window, nature frowns,
But it's long been known, there is no such thing as bad weather.
Everything is yellowing all around me, and the summer is leaving,
We'll survive this trouble too,
By the way, we'll survive it.

A bit of entertainment for your Monday :)

This is a children's story by a Russian writer Nikolai Nosov. I've laughed over his stories when I was in grade school, and recently, this one came to mind, so I translated it for your reading pleasure.

I hope you enjoy:

Mishka's Gruel

by
Nikolai Nosov

One time, when I was living on the dacha with my mom, Mishka came to visit. I was so glad he came, I can't even begin to tell you! I have missed Mishka so much. My mom was also glad he came.

"It's great that that you came now," she said. "It'll be more fun for the two of you here. By the way, I need to go into the town tomorrow. I might stay overnight. Will you be able to manage here for two days without me?"

"Of course, we'll manage," said I. "We're big boys!"

"The only thing is, you'll have to cook your own lunch. Will you be able to do that?"

"'Course we will," said Mishka. "How hard can it be?"

"Well, you can make soup and gruel. Gruel's easy to cook."

"We'll cook gruel. It's real easy to cook!" said Mishka. I said,

"I don't know, Mishka, what if we can't? You'd never cooked it before."

"Don't worry! I saw my mom cook it. You won't die of starvation, you'll be well-fed. I'll make such gruel that it'll be finger-licking good!"
In the morning... )

Ukrainian children's foundation requests help

med_cat: (cat in dress)
I personally know several of the people in charge; their current request is nutritional supplements and vitamins for children with CF. They can be bought and sent directly to the fund's volunteers in the USA or Germany, who will then forward the packages to the Ukraine. (These vitamins and supplements are not available in the Ukraine)

Every little bit helps, and one package of vitamins or supplements only costs $10--$30.

This is an excellent organization--if you have a few minutes, a stamp, and an envelope, send someone a cheery note. I have done so in the past and and I am resuming now.

Card Houses

My little niece and I--I read
My Plato in my easy-chair;
And she was building on the floor
A pack of cards with wondrous care.

We worked in silence, but alas!
Among the cards a mighty spill,
And then the little ape exclaimed,
"Well! Such is life! Look, Uncle Will!"

I gave a start and dropped my book,--
It was the "Phaedo" I had read,--
A sympathetic current thrilled
Like lightning through my heart and head.

I eyed with curious awe the child... )
