Noted and quoted

med_cat: (cat and books)

'The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naïve forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget.'

Thomas Szasz (b. 1920)

and in a similar vein:

"Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names."
(Theodore Roosevelt)

and

"Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much."
(Oscar Wilde)

and on a different note:

Forgiveness

My heart was heavy, for its trust had been
Abused, its kindness answered with foul wrong;
So turning gloomily from my fellow men,
One summer Sabbath day I strolled among
The green mounds of the village burial-place;
Where, pondering how all human love and hate
Find one sad level; and how, soon or late,
Wronged and wrongdoer, each with meekened face,
And cold hands folded over a still heart,
Pass the green threshold of our common grave,
Whither all footsteps tend, whence none depart,
Awed for myself, and pitying my race,
Our common sorrow, like a mighty wave,
Swept all my pride away, and, trembling, I forgave!

(John Greenleaf Whittier)

I like the T. Roosevelt quotation. A British Prime Minister of the C19. Loed Melbourne, once remarked that he was too indolent to bear malice; and it does in fact take a certain energy to maintain resentments against people, energy that might as well be spared or turned to better use.

Sounds like we could use more world leaders of that thinking right now, we would be much better off!

I like this one. It is something I do... Forgive my enemies, I mean.
"Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much."
(Oscar Wilde)

"Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names."
(Theodore Roosevelt)

Exactly... Forgiveness is a great thing. I personally forgive but I never forget someone that harmed me or my own... I don't bear malice. I don't waste my energy on bearing malice.

I agree. There is only one person i make an exception to that rule as she stepped over the moral line big time. I never did like her as a child and neither did my Mother. And my reasons for not liking her much has sadly been proven right.

Haha you are the one who told me the Oscar Wilde quote, a while ago ;) The Whittier poem is in the "Light from many lamps" anthology. And thank you for the compliment.
